.Zoos can play a huge role in developing educational materials for field projects by working closely with field researchers to better understand the needs of a particular field site. From logo and poster development to creating teaching suitcases as well as assisting in development of curriculum and being a source of school supplies are all examples of how zoos can offer their expertise and funding to assist field projects.

 

 

Some thoughts and reflections on the use of illustration in Biodiversity Education Campaigns

Abstract: The need to appreciate the interconnectedness of all life on Earth has never been more important than it is today, as our own species, mostly through ignorance, threatens to unravel the rich biological tapestry of which we are a part, and upon which we ultimately depend. Art, and especially imagery, can play a crucial role in reestablishing the profound and vital link between ourselves as individuals and the natural world. Recognizing this, conservationists are making ever more use of illustration in education campaigns worldwide on behalf of endangered wildlife and ecosystems. In this article I have tried to articulate my own feelings about nature, to trace the path that led me to work in this specialized area of art, and to relate some of the lessons I have learned applying illustration to conservation.read more

Using Football (Soccer) as a Conservation Tool:
A Collaborative Effort

...In late 2007 Brevard Zoo hosted our inaugural conservation fundraiser dinner. Our keynote speaker was Director Emeritus, Mr. Jack Hanna of the Columbus Zoo. We were able to raise $7400 in support of jaguar research in Belize, manatee research in Florida, tapir research in Brazil as well as assist our local wildlife rescue hospital with equipment needs for their outreach education programs. read more
